I call this ‘Chinese Souvlaki’. The pancakes for this dish are super easy to make. At least much easier than making Greek flat bread. The whole duck is not easily accessible for many people. Why don’t you use chicken? Roast a whole chicken in the ‘Peking Duck’ flavour OR my ‘Teriyaki Chicken’ can be a good substitute. Just add ‘Chinese Five Spices’ to it, it would be perfectly Chinese. This is a fun, enjoyable and inexpensive dish to entertain your family and friends.

Makes

4 Servings

Ingredients

Roast Chicken 1kg *See my ‘Peking-inspired Roast Chicken’
Savoury Pancakes
Spring Onion 2 to 3 *lighter colour part only
Carrot 1
Cucumber 1/2
Other Vegetable Suggestions
Lettuce, Chilli, Capsicum, Coriander, Onion, Daikon, etc.

Sweet Miso Sauce
Dark Colour Miso (Red Type) 4 tablespoons
Mirin 3 tablespoons
Sugar 3 tablespoons
Sesame Oil 1 teaspoon
Chinese Five Spices 1/4 teaspoon

Method
  1. Prepare Chicken. Roasting is the easiest method because you can do all other preparation while the chicken is roasting in the oven.
  2. Make Savoury Pancakes.
  3. Mix all the Sweet Miso Sauce ingredients in a heat-proof bowl, then cook, stirring occasionally for 2-3 minutes in microwave. You can do this using a saucepan. Alternatively, the ready-made ‘Hoisin Sauce’ is a good sauce for this dish.
  4. Slice all vegetables into thin/fine strips.
  5. When you eat, spread a teaspoonful of ‘Sweet Miso Sauce’ on a pancake, place chicken pieces and vegetables, wrap and enjoy!
