I like grilled Spring Onion very much. I season it with a little bit of Salt or Soy Sauce. Have you tried it yet? You can see it at ‘Lazy Yakitori’ recipe page. I tried to cook Leek in the same way. I am glad I tried it. It was delicious. Perfect for drinking.
Makes
2 Servings
Ingredients
1 Leek
1 tablespoon Sesame Oil
1 pinch Salt
2 to 3 tablespoons Sake (Rice Wine) OR Water
Shichimi (Japanese Chilli Spice Mix)
Extra Salt OR Soy Sauce
Method
- Clean the Leek, especially green parts need to be carefully cleaned. Cut into 2cm thick pieces.
- Heat Sesame Oil in a frying pan over medium low heat. Cook Leek pieces for 3-4 minutes until nicely browned. Turn them over, sprinkle with 1 pinch Salt, add Sake (Rice Wine), and cover with a lid.
- When Sake is evaporated and Leek pieces are nicely browned and soft, it’s done.
- Sprinkle with some Shichimi (Japanese Chilli Spice Mix) and enjoy. You may wish to add extra Salt or a little bit of Soy Sauce.

I never would have thought to pan fry some leeks like this. I’m going to try this soon. By “perfect for drinking” do you mean a good snack to go with a stiff drink?

Cain, I can’t answer your question as I don’t drink soft drinks, but I would enjoy it with green tea. This is a good ‘Otsumami’, that is a Japanese name for something you eat with alcoholic drinks.
