‘Takikomigohan’, a Japanese dish of Rice, is something I truly enjoy cooking and eating. It is absolutely easy to cook if you have a rice cooker, as the Rice is cooked with other ingredients and seasonings. It was a life saver for me when I was a busy parent. Today I cooked it with Pork and added Chinese Five Spice. And the result was fantastic, so I want to share how I cooked it.

Makes

4 Servings

Ingredients

2 cups (*180ml cup) Japanese Short Grain Rice
300g Pork Steaks OR Block
1 clove Garlic *grated
1 small piece Ginger *grated
1/4 teaspoon Salt
1/2 Onion *cut into small pieces
100 to 200g Bok Choy *cut into 1cm wide pieces
4 Boiled Eggs to serve *optional

Soup
400ml Water
1 teaspoon Asian Chicken Bouillon Powder
1 tablespoon Mirin
1 tablespoon Soy Sauce
1 tablespoon Oyster Sauce
1/2 teaspoon Chinese Five Spice
1/2 tablespoon Sesame Oil

Method
  1. Cut Pork into small bite-size pieces, place in a bowl, add Ginger, Garlic and Salt, and mix well. Cut Onion into small pieces.
  2. Place all the Soup ingredients in a measuring jug OR bowl, and mix well.
  3. Place Pork and Onion pieces in Rice Cooker’s inner pot.
  4. Wash Rice, drain well, and spread it over the Pork and Onion, and gently pour the Soup over, but DO NOT stir.

  5. Press ‘COOK’ button to start cooking. When the Rice is cooked, scatter Bok Choy pieces on top, close the lid, let it steamed for 10 minutes, then mix gently.
  6. Serve with Boiled Egg.
