The saying ‘Failure is the mother of success’ is certainly true. I was trying to make Churros, then I didn’t follow the recipe’s cooking steps. I mixed the ingredients wrongly, and the mixture turned very firm like a play dough. It was impossible to pipe it out. I rolled it into ropes, made pattern on them to make them look like Churros, and baked them in the oven, because I didn’t want to waste them. Then… ‘Ta-dah!’

Makes

16 Pieces

Ingredients

1 cup Water
2 tablespoons Sugar OR Caster Sugar
1/8 teaspoon Salt
2 tablespoons (30g) Butter
1 cup Self-Raising Flour
Oil for spraying OR brushing

Cinnamon Sugar
2 tablespoons Caster Sugar
1/2 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon *alter the amount to suit your taste

Chocolate Ganache
80g coarsely chopped Dark Chocolate OR Dark Chocolate Chips
1/3 cup Thickened Cream

Method
  1. Preheat oven to 220℃. Line a baking tray with baking paper.
  2. Place Water, Caster Sugar, Salt and Butter in a saucepan, bring to the boil, then remove from heat.
  3. Add Self-Raising Flour and mix well until the mixture turns a thick dough. *Note: The texture of this dough is similar to the play dough.
  4. When cool enough to handle, divide into 16 portions, and roll each portion into 1cm thick rope, and place on the prepared tray.
  5. Spray or brush Oil on each rope, use a fork to make pattern, then generously Oil again.
  6. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes OR until nicely browned. While the Mock Churros are baking, mix Caster Sugar and Ground Cinnamon in a shallow bowl.
  7. When Mock Churros are baked, coat them with Cinnamon Sugar. Enjoy with Chocolate Ganache OR your favourite Chocolate Sauce. *Note: To make Chocolate Ganache, place Dark Chocolate and Cream in a heat-proof bowl, and warm in the microwave. It takes 30 seconds using my 1100W microwave. Then mix well until Chocolate melts.
