This French hot sandwich is my newest discovery. It’s a ham and cheese sandwich, but made with White Sauce (Béchamel Sauce), and it is baked in the oven. If you omit the Egg, it seems the sandwich is called ‘Croque Monsieur’. I like it with Egg. I sometimes add sliced Tomato, OR Avocado. This is a fancy transformation of a humble ham and cheese sandwich, and you will love it.

Makes

1 Serving

Ingredients

2 sandwich slices Bread of your choice
Shaved Ham
Shredded Cheese *e.g. Gruyère Cheese, Cheddar, Mozzarella, etc.
*Note: Sliced Tomato and Avocado can be a good addition.
1 Egg
Oil for cooking Egg
Salt & Pepper
Finely chopped Herb of your choice *e.g. Parsley, Thyme, etc.

White Sauce (Béchamel Sauce)
5g Butter
1/2 tablespoon Plain Flour
1/4 cup Milk
Salt & Pepper

Method
  1. To make White Sauce, place Butter and Flour in a heat-proof bowl, and heat in the microwave until Butter melts. Mix well with a whisk until smooth.
  2. Add Milk and heat until Milk is hot. Whisk well until smooth, then heat again and bring to the boil. Once it’s boiled, take it out, and whisk well until smooth. Season with Salt and White Pepper, and let it cool while you are preparing other ingredients.
  3. Preheat oven to 220℃. Line a baking tray with baking paper.
  4. Spread White Sauce over a slice of Bread and place it on the prepared tray, with the White Sauce side facing up.
  5. Arrange some shaved Ham and shredded Cheese.

  6. Spread White Sauce over another slice of Bread, place it on top, scatter some shredded Cheese.

  7. Bake for 10 minutes OR until nicely browned.
  8. While the sandwich is baking, cook Egg softly. Sunny-side up OR poached Egg is recommended.
  9. When the sandwich is baked, place the Egg on top, add some Salt, Pepper and Herb, and enjoy. *Note: If you omit the Egg, it seems this sandwich is called ‘Croque Monsieur’.
