‘Kinako (きな粉)’ is finely ground Roasted Soy Beans. Most Asian grocery stores sell it. I bought it from a Daiso store. ‘Kinako’ is a very popular ingredient for Japanese sweets. These candies are traditionally made with ‘Kinako’ and starch syrup called ‘Mizuame’, which is similar to corn syrup. This is a very old Japanese sweet. You can make it using Honey.
Makes
14 to 16 Candies
Ingredients
1/2 cup ‘Kinako’ (Finely Ground Roasted Soy Beans) *about 50g, plus extra for coating
1 pinch Fine Salt
2 tablespoons Honey
Method
- Combine ‘Kinako’, Salt and Honey until smooth and form a firm dough. You may wish to allow the dough to rest in the fridge to firm up.
- Roll the dough into a rope about 1cm in diameter. Cut into 2cm pieces.
- Place some ‘Kinako’ on a plate, roll the candies to coat.
- *Note: You can add Sugar for extra sweetness, Sesame Seeds OR Matcha Powder. If you add more dry ingredients, alter the amount of Honey.

I am glad to have found this recipe as I tried a commercial version and love the taste, though to be fair I also enjoy the taste of things like honey almost taffy :).

Hi Hiroko! I tried this recipe because I’m looking for healthier sweets to pack with my lunch. I was surprised by the subtlety of flavor created with just kinako, salt, and honey — it has a wholesome, classic appeal. Thanks for the recipe!

Honestly, I was not expecting anyone would interested in such a recipe. It is something my grandmother used to enjoy when she was a young child. I am so happy to know you found this recipe, actually tried it, and enjoyed it. Thank you.
