You need ‘Green Shiso’ leaves to make this salad. Alternatively ‘Perilla’ that has similar scent can be used. I used to have so much difficulties to find ‘Shiso’ but now I am growing ‘Shiso’ in my garden. I bought seeds of ‘Aojiso’, Japanese Green Shiso, from a store in NSW on eBay. If you like ‘Shiso’, why don’t you try growing them yourself?
Makes
4 Servings
Ingredients
1 Continental Cucumber *about 300g
1/4 teaspoon Salt
4-5 leaves Shiso *thinly sliced
1/2 to 1 Chilli *thinly sliced
1-2 teaspoons Sesame Oil
1 pinch Sugar
Method
- Cut Cucumber in quarter lengthways and cut diagonally. Or cut it as you like. Sprinkle Salt and massage, then set aside.
- Add all other ingredients and mix to combine.

Thank you so much. I’ve missed salted cucumbers so much after moving from Japan. I may try growing the shiso with my rocket and mizuna greens this year.

Hi Vicki. Thank you for posting your comment. Sometimes the most simple dish like this one is what I crave. Shiso is easy to grow if you can find seeds. I have never collected the seeds at the end of the season. They grow by themselves every year, and they never die.
