This is a super easy rice bowl dish. If you use already thinly sliced Beef, often available as frozen in tube shape, it will be super quick to cook. I love to add Garlic to this dish, but Ginger is also nice. You may wish to add both. This Beef and Tomato mixture is lovely with Noodles or Spaghetti as well.
Makes
1 Serving
Ingredients
100g thinly sliced Beef *cut into bite-size pieces
1/2 to 1 Tomato *cut into bite-size pieces
1 small clove Garlic *finely chopped
Chilli Flakes as required
1 teaspoon Oil *I used Sesame Oil
1 tablespoon Soy Sauce
1 tablespoon Mirin
1/2 teaspoon Sugar *optional, depending on the sweetness of the Tomato
1 serving warm Cooked Rice
Finely chopped Spring Onion
Method
- Heat Oil, Garlic and Chilli in a small frying pan over medium heat, cook Tomato for a minute, add Beef and stir. When Beef changes colour, add Soy Sauce, Mirin and Sugar, and stir until the sauce slightly thickens.
- Half fill a bowl with warm Cooked Rice and cover it with the mixture, add some finely chopped Spring Onion, and enjoy.

Thank you so much for not just this, but all the rice bowl recipes you’ve kindly published on this excellent website! Each wednesday I make one of them for my mother and I to enjoy.
I’ve made this one many times, though bc of beef prices I swap the beef for chicken, so I guess the end product is still a different rice bowl… but with your excellent base recipe! On one occasion we put some fresh bean sprouts on top, which was also quite delicious.
Thank you for your recipes!

Hi Beja. Thank you for trying my recipes regularly and posting such a lovely comment. I’m glad to know my recipes are helping you to cook something for you mother. I haven’t seen my mother in person for 19 years and I am finally planning to visit her in Japan soon. She is now 90 years old. I am looking forward to cooking with her.
