This is one of the cakes that I have been repeatedly baking for decades. It’s a humble looking cake and taste very simple. It is not very sweet but I don’t add icing. I enjoy a slice of this loaf with a nice cup of tea.

100 to 125g Butter
1/2 cup Brown Sugar
2 Eggs
1 & 1/2 cups Self-Raising Flour
1/2 cup Milk
1/2 cup chopped Dates
1/2 cup chopped Walnuts

  1. Preheat oven to 180C. Lightly grease a loaf tin or line with baking paper.
  2. Beat soften Butter and Brown Sugar together in a large bowl until creamy. Add Eggs one at a time, beating well. Add Milk and fold in Flour, then add Dates and Walnuts to combine.
  3. Spoon the mixture into prepared loaf tin, smoothing top. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until cooked. Cool in pan for 5 to 10 minutes before turning onto a cooling rack.
