Many years ago, I tried to recreate a Chocolate Pie that appeared in the film called ‘The Help’. Of course I searched for the recipe, and I found it, but I didn’t try it because of the amount of Sugar the recipe required. This is my own recipe and made the amount of the chocolate filling just right for the store-bought 22cm Flan/Pie Case. This Chocolate Pie is very easy to make.

Makes

8 Servings

Ingredients

1 Frozen Sweet Flan/Pie Base * I used 22cm Case
*Note: Home made sweet tart base would taste a lot better, but ready-to-bake frozen Sweet Pie Base is just fine. See ‘Easiest Sweet Shortcrust Pastry’ if you want to make it from scratch.
1/2 cup Thickened Cream
1 tablespoon Caster Sugar

Chocolate Filling
150g Dark Chocolate
100g Butter
2 tablespoons Cocoa Powder
1/3 cup Brown Sugar
2 tablespoons Caster Sugar
1 pinch Salt
100ml Milk *OR Cream
1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
2 Large Eggs *whisked
2 tablespoons Plain Flour

Method
  1. Preheat oven to 160℃. Place the frozen sweet pie case on an oven tray. It will thaw while you prepare the filling.
  2. Place Dark Chocolate, Butter, Cocoa Powder, Sugars, Salt, Milk (OR Cream) and Vanilla in a saucepan. Heat over low heat until Chocolate and Butter melt. Whisk well until smooth.
  3. Transfer the mixture to a mixing bowl, set aside until slightly cooled. Add Eggs and whisk well, add Plain Flour, and whisk well until smooth.
  4. Pour the mixture into the pie case, and bake for 40 to 50 minutes. If the crust edges get too dark, cover with a sheet of foil. Cool completely.
  5. *Note: The photos below are the same Chocolate Pie that I baked in a 22.5cm Pie Dish using ‘Easiest Sweet Shortcrust Pastry’.

  6. Whisk Thickened Cream and Caster Sugar until firm peaks form. Decorate the cooled Chocolate Pie with the whipped Cream.
