I frequently cook this popular dish which is Vegan, but I am confident meat lovers would enjoy it. Fried Tofu has firm and meaty texture, and the sweet Sesame Miso Sauce is a perfect match with the meaty Fried Tofu and crunchy Cabbage. Make sure Sesame Seeds are toasted and use Sesame Oil made from Roasted Sesame Seeds.
Makes
4 Servings
Ingredients
500g Fried Tofu *cut into bite-size pieces
2 Cabbage Leaves *about 200g, cut into bite-size pieces
1 tablespoon Oil *plus extra
Sesame Miso Sauce
1 tablespoon Toasted Sesame Seeds *ground
1 teaspoon Sesame Oil
1 tablespoon Sugar
1 & 1/2 tablespoons Miso *White Miso recommended
1/2 tablespoon Soy Sauce
2 tablespoons Sake (Rice Wine) *OR Water
1 clove Garlic *grated
1 small piece Ginger *grated
1/4 teaspoon Chilli Flakes *optional
Method
- Combine all the Sesame Miso Sauce ingredients in a small bowl.
- Heat Oil in a large frying pan, cook Fried Tofu pieces until lightly browned, and transfer to a plate.
- Add extra Oil as required, and cook Cabbage Pieces. Add a small mount of Water as you stir because the steam would help the cooking process, but it is optional.
- When the Cabbage pieces are softened, return the Fried Tofu, add the Sesame Miso Sauce, and stir for a few minutes to combine.

Dear Hiroko,
I don’t have much to say to this dish, other than that it tasted absolutely terrific! Ate all four servings in one go, because it’s taste unexpectedly reminded me of a Romanian cabbage dish my grandma used to make me as a child/teen. No one was able to recreate this specific umami taste after she passed away almost two decades ago, so this recipe definitely pulled on my heartstrings. I am genuinely forever grateful that I am able to experience your cooking on a daily basis. Thank you so much. I appreciate you!
Best wishes, Vanessa
Hiroko

Hi Vanessa. I’m so glad you have tried this recipe. It’s one of my family’s favourites and even my meat-loving husband enjoys it.
