Many Japanese dishes are seasoned with Sugar, Soy Sauce and Mirin. The flavour is something I crave every now and then. This ‘Beef & Carrot’ is seasoned with those three. The dish has no special element, yet it tastes so good to me. With freshly cooked Rice and a comforting soup, and maybe with a small refreshing vegetable dish, it perfects a Japanese style meal.

Makes

4 Servings

Ingredients

2 Carrots *about 200g
250g Beef Steak *thinly sliced
1 small piece Ginger *cut into fine strips
1 tablespoon Oil *I used Sesame Oil
Chilli Flakes *optional
1 tablespoon Sugar
2 tablespoons Soy Sauce
1 tablespoon Mirin

Method
  1. Cut Carrot in half lengthways, and cut diagonally into 2-3mm thick slices. Slice Beef Steak as thinly as you can. Cut Ginger into fine strips.
  2. Heat Oil in a frying pan, cook Carrot. When half cooked, add Beef and Ginger, add Chilli Flakes if you add any, and stir until Beef is cooked.
  3. Add Sugar, Soy Sauce and Mirin, and stir until sauce is almost gone. Serve with freshly cooked Rice.
