When I was young and single, I made this rice bowl dish very often. Because it was easy, quick, cheap, yummy and nutritious. You don’t need to cook Sardines because you use Canned Sardines. Why don’t you try this rice bowl once? I am quite certain you will enjoy this dish.
Makes
1 Serving
Ingredients
1 Canned Sardines *about 100g
1/2 teaspoon Grated Fresh Ginger
1/2 teaspoon Chilli Garlic Sauce OR Toban Djan (Chili Bean Sauce)
2 teaspoons Soy Sauce
1 Spring Onion *finely chopped
1/2 Nori Sheet *torn into small pieces
1/2 teaspoon Toasted Sesame Seeds
1 serving Cooked Rice
Method
- Drain the canned Sardines and place them in a bowl. Add Ginger, Chilli Garlic Sauce, Soy Sauce and Spring onion, and mix to combine.
- Half fill a bowl with Freshly Cooked Rice or warmed cooked rice, and cover it with the sardine mixture. Place Nori and Toasted Sesame Seeds on top, and enjoy.

Just found this website not long ago looking for Japanese and Korean inspired sardine recipes. Live in South Australia. One of the best website I have found online for recipes that are easy, enjoyable and work with ingredients that are easily available and affordable in Australia. Thank you.

Greets from Kumamoto , Japan !
Just made my wife’s portion ( I eat an hour later than she ) using canned herring from Russia . She is not a big fan of canned fish ( and doesn’t eat raw fish …and she’s Japanese ! ) but she liked this ! Thanks for sharing .

Thank you, John, for your comment. It must be getting really hot in Kumamoto. When you are tired on a hot day, a quick and easy rice bowl is a go-to. Canned fish is handy as you don’t need to cook it. Please find more canned fish rice bowl recipes.

Thank you, John, for your message. I have never used canned herring in my life. I assume they taste like Sardines. I would love to hear about the result.

Hi Tia. I am so glad you enjoyed this dish. I always stock Canned Sardines, so I can prepare a meal like this one quickly and easily. When I don’t have cooked rice, I sometimes eat this sardines with spaghetti.

Just wanted to say that I loved this recipe! Halfway through eating, I realized I could pour in the green tea I was drinking to do a kind of ochazuke and it was delicious. Thank you for all your recipes!

jt, thank you for your comment. I’m glad you enjoyed this rice bowl. Pouring green tea over this dish sounds very interesting. I think the green tea creates an instant soup. Thinking of all the ingredients, it would be tasty.

Loved this – quick, easy and not much energy use for cooking. I used greens instead of Nori sheet but still tasted good. Thank you!

Kate, thank you for trying this recipe. Canned fish such as Sardines and Mackerel don’t need to be cooked. You might be interested in ‘Gochujang Mackerel Rice Bowl’ as well. https://www.hirokoliston.com/gochujang-mackerel-rice-bowl/

I am so glad you tried this dish and enjoyed it. You know Canned Tuna is so popular, but not many people are interested in Canned Sardines. Sardines’ fine bones bother some people, but it is not an issue for Canned Sardines.
