Canned Mackerel costs slightly more than Canned Tuna, but both are really handy items to stock in the pantry. My husband says Canned Mackerel smells bad, but I love it. Canned Mackerel makes delicious Rice Bowl dishes. ‘Curry Mackerel Don’ and ‘Miso Mackerel Don’ are just a few example. Here is another Rice Bowl dish that can be made with Canned Mackerel, and you don’t need to cook it.
Makes
1 Serving
Ingredients
1 can (125g) Mackerel in Brine
1 serving warm Cooked Rice
1/2 sheet Nori *torn into small pieces
1/2 Spring Onion *finely chopped
Toasted Sesame Seeds
Sauce
1/2 clove Garlic *grated
1 teaspoon Soy Sauce
1 teaspoon Mirin
1 teaspoon Gochujang (Korean Spicy Miso)
1/4 teaspoon Sugar
1/4 teaspoon Sesame Oil
Method
- Drain Canned Mackerel, discard the brine, and break into bite-size pieces.
- Combine all the Sauce ingredients in a bowl, add Mackerel pieces, and mix to combine.
- Half fill a bowl with warmed Cooked Rice, scatter Nori pieces, and cover with the Mackerel mixture. Sprinkle with finely chopped Spring Onion and some Toasted Sesame Seeds, and enjoy.

Had this for lunch today and really enjoyed it. I ate half exactly as described. For the other half I added a tbs of hot water to the spiced mackerel and carefully heated it in pan (it is winter here). I really liked both. Was good with cauliflower rice.
Your children are very lucky to have such a wonderful and useful record of their heritage 🙂 It always blows my mind that I can stand here in my (Amsterdam) kitchen and can cook something that is completely new to me but a staple to someone else on the other side of the world. I mean I only stared cooking with Gochujang about 2 years ago (and now always have some in my fridge). Thank you so much for sharing these lovely simple recipes. Looking forward to making many more.

I think I am addicted to your blog. I already selected so many recipes I want to cook when I took a break from work today – but I had to go back for more 🙂 Love this recipe. I enjoy smoked mackerel very much but one is too much for me so I only having people over for lunch. Today was the first time I used mackerel from a tin (as a spread with creamy yoghurt and gherkins etc) Now I cannot wait to try this recipe. You really have me inspired (and hooked)

Knowing someone living somewhere I don’t know is cooking my recipe makes extremely happy. I originally started writing my recipes to pass them on to my children, who are now grown up. Thank you for taking time to write this comment. Keep enjoying what you enjoy to do.
