There is a popular Japanese dish called ‘Hiyayakko’. It is basically cold soft type Tofu. You can eat it with just Soy Sauce, but we often add a variety of condiments, herbs, vegetables, etc. Spring Onion and Bonito Flakes are popular. I like Kimchi. ‘Hiyayakko’ is a quick and easy dish that is perfect on a hot summer day. Here is my newest invention. It is actually very filling.

2 Servings

3 to 4 Spring Onions *finely chopped
1 clove Garlic *grated
1/4 teaspoon Salt
1 teaspoon Sesame Oil
2 x 300g Silken Tofu *OR other soft type Tofu
Fried Shallots
Crispy Chilli Oil

Soy Sauce

  1. Combine finely chopped Spring Onion, grated Garlic, Salt and Sesame Oil in a bowl.
  2. Remove excess water from Tofu, place in serving bowl OR plate, cover with the Spring Onion mixture.
  3. Add Fried Shallots and Crispy Chilli Oil as much as you want, drizzle with Soy Sauce, and enjoy. *Note: Fried Shallots and Crispy Chilli Oil are available from most supermarket stores in Australia. Asian grocery stores are definitely selling them.
