This is actually the same thing as Onion ‘Kakiage’ Tempura. ‘Kakiage’ is a type of Tempura made with a variety of thinly sliced or chopped Vegetables and Seafood. The most popular ingredient is probably Onion. I pan-fried the mixture instead of deep-frying it. This humble Onion Pancake is very tasty.

Makes

2 Servings

Ingredients

1 large Onion *thinly sliced
1 tablespoon Oil

Batter
1/4 cup Plain Flour
1/4 cup Potato Starch
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon Salt
1 Egg
2 tablespoons Water *plus extra if required
*Note: You can use Cold Water only if you don’t want to use Egg

Dipping Sauce
2 tablespoons ‘Ponzu’ to serve *OR 1 tablespoon Soy Sauce & 1 tablespoon Rice Vinegar
Crispy Chilli Oil OR Rāyu (Chilli Oil) to serve

Method
  1. Mix the Batter ingredients in a mixing bowl. Alter the amount of Water to make thick Batter.
  2. Add thinly sliced Onion to the batter and mix well to combine.
  3. Heat Oil in a frying pan over medium low heat, form a large pancake OR 2 to 4 smaller pancakes, and cook until both sides are nicely browned and crispy.
  4. Cut into smaller pieces if large, and serve with ‘Ponzu’. I recommend to add some Crispy Chilli Oil OR Rāyu (Chilli Oil) to the sauce.
