When my children were very young, I used to make this ‘Sweet & Sour Meatballs’ quite often. I put these meatballs into their lunch box and they loved them. The flavour of these meatballs brings back happy memories of those days. I always use beef & pork mix mince, but chicken mince is also very nice.

4 Servings

Beef & Pork Mince 500g
Spring Onions (firm white parts) 4 *finely chopped
Panko Bread Crumbs 1/4 cup
Egg 1
Ginger 1 small piece *grated
Oil to fry

Sweet & Sour Sauce
Mirin 3 tablespoons
Sugar 1 tablespoon
Soy Sauce 3 tablespoons
Vinegar 2 tablespoons
Tomato Ketchup 1/4 cup
Potato Starch Flour 1 tablespoon
Water 2 tablespoons

  1. Place Mince, Spring Onion, Panko, Egg and Ginger in a bowl. Season with Salt and Pepper. Mix to combine, then roll the mixture into small balls. Place on a plate.
  2. Heat oil in a frypan over medium-high heat. Cook meatballs turning for 4 to 5 minutes or until browned all over and cooked through. Transfer to a plate.
  3. Place Mirin, Sugar, Soy Sauce, Vinegar and Tomato Ketchup in a small bowl and mix well. In another small bowl, mix Potato Starch Flour and Water.
  4. Cook the sauce mixture in a large frypan over medium heat. When it is boiling, add the well mixed Potato Starch mixture gradually into the sauce and thicken up. Add meatballs and combine well.
