My Sardine rice bowl recipes, such as ‘Garlic Sardines Rice Bowl’, seem to be very popular. I am happy to know many people somewhere in the world are cooking them. You can find other Sardine rice bowl recipes by searching with the key words ‘sardine rice bowl’. This is another easy rice bowl that I often cook. I recommend to use a lighter coloured Miso for this one.
Makes
1 Serving
Ingredients
1 can (110g) Sardines in Springwater *drained
1 large Spring Onion *sliced diagonally
1 teaspoon Sesame Oil *OR Oil of your choice
1 serving warm Cooked Rice
Shichimi (Japanese Chilli Spice Mix) OR Ground Chilli *optional
Miso Sauce
1 tablespoon Miso *White Miso recommended
1 tablespoon Sake (Rice Wine) *OR Mirin for sweeter flavour
1 & 1/2 teaspoons (1/2 tablespoon) Sugar
1 teaspoon Grated Ginger
Method
- Make Miso Sauce by mixing all ingredients in a small bowl.
- Place drained Sardines, Spring Onion and Sesame Oil in a small frying pan, heat over medium heat, and cook for a minute.
- Add the Sauce and simmer over a low heat for a minute, and let all combined well.
- Half fill a bowl with warm Cooked Rice and cover it with the Sardine mixture. Sprinkle with some Shichimi (Japanese Chilli Spice Mix) OR Ground Chilli, and enjoy.

Thank you very much for a simple, delicious recipe. The sweet miso taste was new to me, surprisingly complex. I really appreciated it and I find myself wanting to try it with other proteins, like chickpeas. I only had sardines in oil, so I drained them and subbed sesame oil for sesame seeds. Delicious!
