I have never wished to make ‘Shiro-an (White Bean Paste) in Japan. It was something I should buy from sweet shops. But here in Australia, if I want to eat it, I have to make it using substitute beans as the Japanese White Beans are not available here. This method is the easiest way to make ‘Shiro-an’ or something that looks and tastes like it. Use canned Butter Beans!
Makes
About 200g
Ingredients
Canned Butter Beans 200g
*You get about 200g Beans from a 400g can.
Sugar 1/4 Cup
Salt *optional if the Butter Beans are unsalted
Food Processor Method
- Rinse Butter Beans and drain well. Place all Butter Beans into a food processor and make them into paste. *Note: For extra smooth texture, remove all outer skins before processing.
- Add sugar and pinch of salt. Process until it gets smooth paste texture.
- *Note: If you wish to cook the beans by yourself, I recommend to use Large Butter Beans (Lima Beans). Soak the beans overnight. Next day, rinse and drain the beans, remove skins, then cook in water until absolutely tender.
