This dish is called ‘Ebi (Prawns) Macaroni Gratin’ in Japan, as Macaroni are commonly used. It is a very popular dish. However, in Melbourne where I live, Macaroni are very short and small, and I don’t like to use them for this dish. I use other Pasta such as Pennette, Trivelle, Gemelli, etc. You can use any Pasta of your choice. Broccoli is optional. You can use other vegetables such as Spinach, Asparagus, Peas, etc.
Makes
2 Servings
Ingredients
30g Butter
1/2 Onion *thinly sliced
150g shelled Prawns *thawed if frozen, deveined
3 tablespoons Plain Flour *1 tablespoon is 15ml
2 cups Milk
Salt & White Pepper
100g Pasta *e.g. Macaroni, Pennette, Trivelle, Gemelli, etc.
100g Broccoli *cut into small florets
1/2 cup shredded Cheese *I used Cheese Mix for Baking
Method
- Preheat oven to 200℃.
- Cook Pasta of your choice in the boiling salted water. When Pasta is almost cooked, add Broccoli florets and bring back to the boil. Cook for a minute, then drain and transfer to the sauce later.
- Melt Butter in a frying pan over medium heat, cook Onion for a few minutes, and add Prawns. When Prawns changes colour, add Flour and stir, add Milk, and cook until thickens. Season with Salt and White Pepper. I added 1/2 teaspoon Salt.
- Transfer the drained cooked Pasta and Broccoli into the sauce, and combine well.
- Spoon into a baking dish, OR two baking dishes for individual serves. Scatter shredded Cheese and bake for 20 minutes OR until golden.
