When I was a child, my family’s breakfast was ‘Toast & Hot Drink’, not ‘Miso Soup & Rice’. When we were out of bread, my mother made steamed buns for us. Sometimes she made pancakes, but it seemed steamed buns were the easiest to make for her. She often made ‘Raisin Buns’. I make them with Sultanas which are more popular than Raisins in Australia.

Makes

8 Buns

Ingredients

1 & 1/2 cups Self-Raising Flour
2 tablespoons Sugar
1 pinch Salt
1 large Egg
10 to 20g Butter *melted
1/4 cup Water
1/4 cup Sultanas *OR add as much as you like

Method
  1. Place all ingredients in a bowl, and mix to form a soft dough. Divide into 8 portions and roll into balls. Place each ball on a piece of baking paper (size 10 x 10cm).
  2. Pour water into a steamer pot and bring to the boil over high heat. Place buns into steamer, cover with lid and cook for 10 minutes. Repeat with remaining buns. Serve warm.
